Community living is where the Housing Connection enters the picture of MRDD care. We provide the houses throughout the community that become homes for MRDD tenants and the professional staff who live with them. Our role is that of a caring and responsible landlord. Here are some features of our task:

HC purchases or builds houses and adapts them to the needs of MRDD tenants.
HC coordinates with MRDD Path Coordinators to provide an optimum independent living experience for each person.
HC maintains its properties in order to promote the well-being of its tenants and the enhancement of the neighborhoods in which they reside.
HC establishes and collects rents that take into account the resources of its tenants.
HC balances the support of tenants with fiscal responsibility.

As of 2008 the roster of HC properties had grown to more than 30. The capacity of these homes ranges from two to four tenants.

The Housing Connection, Inc.: An Independent Non-Profit Corporation

The primary focus of the MRDD Board is people and their care; the primary focus of the Housing Connection is real estate and its efficient management. Experience has shown that the most effective model for these two distinct but related tasks is that of two independent but closely linked organizations. As a result, there are two separate Boards united by the mission of serving persons with MRDD and their families. Formal interrelationships are worth noting:

HC receives partial funding each year from the MRDD Board.
Certain members of the HC Board also serve on the MRDD Board.
HC administration is provided by staff of TAC Enterprises, an MRDD Board affiliate.

What does this organizational structure mean? The citizens of Clark County can be confident that their tax dollars support a community-based MRDD service that combines compassion with stewardship grounded in professional management practices.
